Studio Smoll is a design brand from Taiwan.
We believe good design is not only about creating something new. It is also an opportunity to rethink how an object is made, how it is used, and how it can continue to exist.
Rather than adding more, we often ask:
What is truly necessary?
Can we use one less component or eliminate one more process?
Can we follow the nature of a material to find a more direct structure?
And after an object has been used, can we leave room for it to change, be repaired, or even enter the cycle again?
We do not pursue simplicity for simplicity’s sake. Instead, we remove what is unnecessary, one decision at a time, until what remains has a genuine purpose in how the object is used.
That is why, in Studio Smoll’s work, you may see a single piece of leather folded into structure, different materials allowed to do what they do best, components designed to be removed and replaced, and even products completed by the users themselves.
We don’t make materials conform to design. We let materials take part in shaping it
Through years of designing, making, and experimenting, this way of thinking has evolved into what we call Smollism.
It is not a style, nor a fixed visual language. It is a way of thinking that brings us back to three principles whenever we design:
From vegetable-tanned leather to recycled rPET made from recovered PET bottles, we consider not only how a material is used, but also what can happen after its first use comes to an end.
To us, regeneration is more than turning recycled material into another product. It is about working toward a cycle in which making, using, recovering, and regenerating can continue to happen.
When the possibility of another life is considered from the very beginning, disposal no longer has to be the only ending.
Every material has its own character.
We look for structure within its thickness, resilience, flexibility, rigidity, and softness — using folds to replace some stitching and structure to replace unnecessary reinforcement.
When a material is no longer simply a surface carrying a predetermined form, it begins to participate in the design itself.
And the design evolves with it.
The moment an object is made is only the beginning of its life.
Through structures that can be disassembled, replaceable components, and repairable construction, Studio Smoll aims to ensure that wear in one part does not have to mean the end of the entire object.
For selected products, we take this idea one step further by leaving the final assembly to the user. Completing an object by hand creates an understanding of how it is put together — and, in turn, how it can be taken apart, adjusted, and repaired.
From owning an object to understanding it.
We believe this understanding can create a different relationship with the things we own — one that encourages them to be valued, cared for, and used for longer.
We do not believe sustainability should come at the expense of beauty. Nor do we believe good design needs more materials or more complicated processes to prove its value.
Sometimes, meaningful change begins with something smaller.
One less piece of material. One less seam. A component that can be replaced. Or simply a new way of thinking about a familiar structure.
Small decisions like these can make an object more direct, lighter, easier to understand — and easier to continue.
It is not simply about making things smaller or using less. It comes from our belief that design does not always need a dramatic change to make a meaningful difference.
A small but precise change can reduce materials and processes.
A purer structure can change the way an object is made and used.
A replaceable component can help an object stay with us for longer.
A choice may seem small, but when it happens in the right place, its impact can reach far beyond its scale.
This was the idea behind Studio Smoll when we began, and it remains what we believe today.
Less is about making what truly matters clearer.
Starting with one small change, we make design more pure —
and give objects more possibilities to continue.

Small changes. Meaningful impact.
